Skywood

Austria

Near Vienna’s Westbahnhof, a two-storey rooftop extension was added to a house from the late nineteenth century. In a fully built-up area with high demand for housing, the architects Regina M. Lettner and Günter Lagler of skywood by baukult found a way to create new space. The building is positive example of urban densification in terms of ecology, cost and added value.

While respecting the historic fabric, the architects made use of the design freedoms offered by wood and steel as light, high-performance materials.

After 5 weeks of construction, the new space presents itself as welcoming, filled with light and with panoramic views.

LIVING SPACE: ROOF

A convincing demonstration of how to build on top of an existing historic house.

ESSENTIAL FACTORS

for successful urban densification are rapid and lightweight construction.

TECHNOLOGY

The performance of Kielsteg in forming wide spans met the ambitious requirements of the designers.
