As the Junges Staatstheater Berlin, the Theater an der Parkaue is one of the largest and most important theatres for young audiences in Germany. It is undergoing extensive refurbishment in three construction phases to meet fire safety regulations, modernise outdated stage technology, create contemporary working conditions and safeguard the building’s infrastructure.

The refurbishment and major repairs are taking place whilst the theatre remains open. In the third phase of construction, following demolition, the new Building 5 is currently being built: it is intended to house the theatre’s workshops, including a set and costume workshop, a lighting workshop and a smaller joinery and metalwork workshop.

For the new roof of House 5, 28 cm high Kielsteg elements with a span of 8.1 m are being used!

Construction update on the new sports hall on Meidoornweg

In the north of Amsterdam, a sports hall is being built on Meidoornweg, and work is progressing rapidly. With a total floor area of 2,700 m², the building will provide ample space for children and young people from two neighbouring schools to take part in sports activities. In addition, the new sports hall will be open to sports clubs in the evenings and at weekends. The building currently takes the form of a steel structure supporting the wooden roof construction above the sports hall. The roof structure, made entirely of wood and spanning the 1,630 m² playing area, is particularly impressive.

Project development, planning and engineering are already being carried out by Korlam, our new partner for the Benelux countries.

Four pairs of glulam beams span the building’s width of 34 m as primary beam axes. Structurally, they enable the sports field to be divided into three separate sections. The secondary structure, each with a 16 m span, is formed by the Kielsteg structural elements as a continuous surface across the three sections. Kielsteg provides flexibility for the installation of necessary sports equipment. Used as a secondary structue, it provides the necessary span with a low construction height and low dead weight, serving as a platform for the PV system. The structure is divided into the towering central cuboid, which acts as a shell for the sports field; this is surrounded on three sides by a low-rise structure. The single-storey building places the access areas, the buffet, the washrooms and changing facilities arranging them clearly and conveniently close to the central sports area.

The future greening of the sports hall’s towering façade will provide cooling through evaporation on hot days. Furthermore, the green façade serves as a natural habitat for insects and birds. Over the years, the green cube will create an ecosystem that connects with the surrounding park. The roof will be fitted with solar panels to make the building self-sufficient in its operation.

With this building, the Amsterdam-based architectural firm RU+PA has created exemplary architecture in terms of synergy effects that thoughtfully extend beyond the building’s actual use.

Güssing heralds a new era with EUROSPAR

Modern, welcoming and spacious: after around a year of construction, the newly built EUROSPAR in Güssing is opening its doors, covering an area of 1,200 m². In addition to its architectural design, Spar has prioritised sustainability through an autonomous energy supply for the building’s operations and in the choice of building materials. In addition to its architectural standards, Spar is committed to sustainability through self-sufficient energy supply for the building’s operations and in its choice of building materials. The newly built EUROSPAR strengthens local supply in the region and creates a modern retail structure that will benefit the region’s residents in the long term.

The KIELSTEG structure, covering an area of approximately 1,000 m², forms the majority of the building’s roof. The slender structure (l/h 41) with a closed and flat underside ensures a favourable ratio between the total building height and the clear room height.

A new SPAR supermarket in operation

Given the indispensability of daily local supply for society, the new SPAR supermarket in Heimschuh, Austria, is also a prime example of contemporary construction. Buildings in this category offer great potential in terms of reducing CO2 emissions during construction and operation.

Today, more than ever, energy-saving building technology and ecological, high-performance building materials are available.

In addition to the recently built branches in Ostermiething and Duplek (Slovenia), this is another supermarket that has now been put into operation with a visually and functionally impressive wooden roof construction from KIELSTEG.

The KIELSTEG elements, which are up to 25 metres long, span the building at 18.5 metres and, with their overhang of more than 6 metres, create a spacious, weather-protected entrance area.

The natural and unclad wooden soffit of the KIELSTEG surface structure gives the interior a spacious feel. The KIELSTEG roof serves as a platform for the PV system.

High demands in exceptional applications

e + h Services AG is a wholesale company that has been in existence for 90 years and supplies Swiss retailers with branded goods for work, gardening and the home. To ensure that customers benefit from very short delivery times, e + h Services relies on a modern logistics facility! At the company’s headquarters, a stock hall was converted into an automated logistics centre. The entire interior of the hall is filled with high-bay racks from which goods are automatically removed and replenished. In order to utilise the maximum storage capacity of the space, the manual packaging area was placed under the high-bay racking system in the hall as an elongated, flat structure.

The so-called picking tunnel, which runs lengthwise through the hall, is used as a transport axis for goods delivery. The goods are transported from the high-bay racking via openings in the tunnel roof to the packing stations and from there directly to the vehicles. The tunnel is a 52.3 m long, 11 m wide and 5 m high wooden structure. The walls are made of 16 cm thick CLT. 61.5 cm high kielsteg elements form the 11-metre-span tunnel roof. The kielsteg elements support the moving logistics robots with a payload requirement of 5.89 kN/m². The deflection requirement is L/800.

Despite high loads and the space requirements for the order picking process, the tunnel construction must remain as slim as possible in order to maximise storage capacity. Kielsteg makes this possible! The wooden surfaces in the order picking tunnel create a pleasant working atmosphere for the staff, even in the midst of the highly dynamic logistics system. The structure was built by Holzbau Jäggi Dulliken AG. Atlas Tragwerke AG in Zurich provided the engineering and timber construction planning. The kielsteg elements and their workshop planning were supplied by Holz Stürm in Goldach.

Office and warehouse under one roof

A company building is currently being constructed in Cologne for a company that works in the international distribution of plastics and elastomers. The new building, with an underground car park, ground-level storage areas, and offices above, is characterized by its high flexibility of use on a minimal building area. KIELSTEG wooden roof elements also make a valuable contribution to space efficiency. The lightweight and high-load-bearing elements are predestined for use as a Roof structure for large spans to support the free use of the rooms below. The elements also impress with their slim design – with a construction height of only 37 cm, they span the required 16.5 meters as a roof structure. They enabled the planners to realize the overall building height within the requirements. The uncladet, distinctive striped surface of the KIELSTEG components also makes a formal contribution to the perception of the interior spaces. The new building was designed by Wendling Architektur in Cologne.

Sports hall

Šentilj is a small town in the northeast of Slovenia, on the border to Austria, with 8,452 inhabitants. The town has grown strongly in the last two decades, and this created the need to build the new sports and leisure centre. It is the biggest investment in the history of the community. The new building complex has a total of 2,290 m² floor area. This is divided between the central sports halls, with 1,400 m², and a three-storey block right next to them. This section contains the spectator galleries with space for 600 people, and on the other floors, changing rooms, sanitary facilities and utility rooms. A large multipurpose room on the first floor provides views of both the indoor sports halls and the outdoor playing fields. Outside terraces connect the building to the outdoor playing fields and a panoramic view by a balcony on the first floor. A central question that has to be solved in the design of any sports hall is how to build the roof over the hall. The structural solution for the roof is a determining factor for the overall height of the building, and has important implications for costs and compliance with planning regulations. The roof structure and its height also affect the volume of the space that can be used for games and also influence the visual perception of the space. Finally, the ability to use the roof for installation of utilities and sports equipment is also a key requirement of this project category. In Šentilj, the Kielsteg roof spans the building in a single span of 24 m with an element height of just 80 cm. The building is fully self-sufficient for energy, thanks to the solar array on the slightly inclined flat roof.

Ströck Bakery: New production hall with roof garden

The Ströck bakery with 80 branches in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland has expanded one of its two production sites in Vienna/Donaustadt to include a new production hall with a spacious roof garden. With a remarkably diverse utilisation concept from Architects Collective ZT GmbH, the Ströck-Brot hall, which was completed last year, has become a flagship project for the bakery company – also in terms of the exemplary use of roof space.

Around 500 m² of KIELSTEG construction elements span the new hall and support the roof garden. KIELSTEG has once again risen to the challenge of roof structures with large spans and special requirements for this building. The garden, lushly planted with trees and shrubs, serves as a green recreation area for staff during breaks. In addition to the relaxation areas, fresh herbs for production grow in a greenhouse all year round. The roof also provides an impressive location for various company events.

A high-performance photovoltaic system is also installed on the roof. It supplies around 30 of Ströck-Brot’s 80 branches with clean and renewable energy from solar power. A roof surface can hardly contribute more to the benefit of a building!

EDEKA Supermarket

In Nauen, in the state of Brandenburg, EDEKA has built a supermarket of the future that shows the way for CO2 -saving construction and operation of this essential local supply infrastructure. Ulf-U. Plath, managing director of EDEKA Minden-Hannover, emphasizes the company’s commitment to lived sustainability.

The building designed by ZRS Architekten Ingenieure is an impressive demonstration of wooden construction and the determined use of materials with a low CO2 signature. Solar carports on the parking lot and a solar power plant on the roof of the market ensure that the energy supply is also sustainable.

The building is a classic structural shed about 85 m long, 50 m wide and 8.5 m high, with a gross floor area of almost 5,000 m². The walls are built as wooden frameworks with wood-fibre insulation. The primary roof supports are trusses made of beech laminated veneer timber, which cross the width of the building in three spans of 16.44 m each, supported at the walls and on two intermediate posts. The secondary roof structure is formed by Kielsteg elements with an element height of 48.5 cm, laid from one truss to the next: the trusses are at different heights, so that the Kielsteg roof sections have a pitch of 10°, with an effective horizontal span of 12.7 m each. The resulting roof is a series of clean uninterrupted planes forming a visually important part of the whole.

Outside and inside, wood is the dominant visible material. The composition of wooden surfaces of the building envelope and the interior is impressive, not in any way tedious. The utilities are surface-mounted for practical reasons, which also suits the no-nonsense aesthetic. Thanks to new technologies and sustainable materials, the EDEKA Future Market shows how ecological business can succeed.

The SPAR store in Heimschuh, Austria, will soon be opening another supermarket with a visually and functionally impressive KIELSTEG timber roof construction. The KIELSTEG elements, which are up to 25 meters long, create an inviting and open sales area – spanning over 18.5 meters without supports – and the roof elements, which project over six meters, also create a weather-protected entrance area. The natural and unclad timber soffit of the KIELSTEG load-bearing structure also creates a sales-promoting ambience.

In view of the indispensability of daily local supplies for society, the new SPAR supermarket is exemplary of contemporary construction. Buildings in this category offer great potential in terms of reducing CO2 during construction and operation. The focus here is on the use of both ecological and high-performance building materials for maximum flexibility of use and energy-saving building technology.

The energy consumption of the new SPAR store during operation is kept extremely low thanks to the modern building technology. A heat recovery system uses the waste heat from the refrigeration units for heating, and the KIELSTEG roof, which is only approx. 60 cm flat but has a high load-bearing capacity, also serves as a platform for a PV system.

Contemporary new timber building for the Graz scouts

The scouts of Group 10 in Graz proved their staying power with their plan for a new clubhouse: almost 10 years passed from the idea to the grand opening in September 2024!

The new clubhouse is now available to 80 children and their carers. The building with 250 m² of usable space consists of timber frame walls and a KIELSTEG timber roof. The project shows that even smaller buildings can benefit from the advantages of building with wood.

The new building has a separate room for each group and allows a meeting room of almost 100 m² to be opened up via a folding wall between the kitchen and the carers‘ room. A PV system on part of the KIELSTEG roof forms the power station for the home. The rest of the open space is accessible and is actively and happily used by the children!

The building was financed with support from the city of Graz and the Styrian provincial government. The idea and the designs were created by L. Wipfler. He is the team leader of the scout group and a structural engineer by profession and was also in favour of a contemporary timber construction for the new scout home – particularly with a view to a short construction time and a high degree of flexibility in the building’s use.

Carpentry Dandl KG

The carpentry Dandl KG is one of the largest manufacturers of windows and doors in the Rupertiwinkel region of Upper Bavaria. Dandl combines proven traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art production technology.

With the construction of a new administration and exhibition building, the production area has now also been expanded and a fully automated coating system with a painting robot has been put into operation.

KIELSTEG elements with a length of 25.5 m span the new hall area without supports, so that the window painting line could be installed without collisions.

Generous skylight domes were also integrated into the KIELSTEG roof, providing plenty of daylight in the hall. Despite the enormous load-bearing capacity, the KIELSTEG elements are characterized by a comparatively low construction height, so that overall a harmonious architecture with a flat extension could be realized.

Medical technology iTD

Medical devices are among the fastest-growing industries in Germany. This is good business for iTD, a company from Lower Bavaria that makes mobile carts and articulated arms for carrying medical devices. And so the company has invested in a brand-new headquarters and factory. Bringing together many different functions in one contiguous block, the building uses a cleverly conceived layout to reduce the distances people and materials have to travel. The project is a vision of the future and illustrates a perfect symbiosis of design, functionality, cost efficiency and sustainability.

Due to the huge dimensions of the production areas, which are more than 200 m long, the architects chose an unusual solution and placed the offices and social spaces on top of the factory. This massively reduced the distances that some employees have to cover and also considerably reduced the soil sealing.

Out of respect for the rural setting, it was a goal to keep the building as low as possible, and with a roof construction just 73 cm high, Kielsteg elements helped significantly in achieving this goal. In spans of 22 m, the Kielsteg roof leaves a lot of freedom for the floor layout. In the communication zones between the offices, the loadbearing Kielsteg roof is consciously exposed as a design element, combining function and optics.

The new building complex has a green roof, which helps bed the building into its green surroundings, and is a valuable compensation for the sealed ground area. Kielsteg is perfectly suited for green roofs and this was an advantage the architects used consciously. The green roof also improves the energy efficiency of the building and is a natural temperature regulator.

Shigeru Ban Simose Art Museum Waterfront KIELSTEG Villas

The Simose Art Museum in Otake Hiroshima is home to around 500 works of art in the personal collection of Yumiko Shimose, president of Marui Sangyo Corporation. The museum’s motto is “admire art, inside art”. Its buildings – exhibition spaces, the gardens, garden villas and a restaurant – and their composition in a garden landscape are themselves works of art. An important part of this integration into a Gesamtkunstwerk has been contributed by architect Shigeru Ban, winner of the 2014 Pritzker Prize. Eight floating exhibition spaces designed by him create a context for historically significant works of art. And in the form of the Simose Art Waterfront KIELSTEG Villas, the architect has installed inhabitable works of art. With persuasive simplicity, Shigeru Ban developed not only the entire loadbearing structure, but also, equally, the formal expression of the villas, from KIELSTEG. This involves completely new uses of the material.

INTERSPORT Siebzehnrübl: Efficient use of space with KIELSTEG

Intersport Siebzehnrübl, one of the largest sports retailers in south-east Bavaria, is expanding its flagship store in Altötting.

The new extension, which will increase the existing sales area to approx. 1,700 square meters, will also be the architectural flagship of the branch network, which comprises seven stores between Munich and Passau.

Approx. 19 meter long KIELSTEG roof elements are used in this project. These timber construction elements span the new areas without supports: a significant advantage for the sales areas, as the built-over area offers maximum flexibility in terms of furnishing design.

KIELSTEG also ensures flexibility on the roof area. The flat roof – the components are only approx. 73 cm high – is greened and serves as a platform for a PV system!

Updated EPD for KIELSTEG

In the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) issued and recalculated on 28.03.2024, we now also make visible the improved energy supply for the production of KIELSTEG timber construction elements through a PV system since 2022. The EPD is certified in accordance with the European regulations ISO 14025 and EN 15805+A2 and is also used by our sales partners inside and outside the EU. Building with wood has the potential to significantly support the reduction of CO2 emissions. We therefore see it as our responsibility to improve the CO2 footprint of our KIELSTEG elements and to disclose the CO2 balance over the entire life cycle from cradle to grave for architects and planners. With the EPD, we also support experts in verifying CO2 indicators as part of the planning of sustainable, subsidized buildings.

We are convinced that:

only the long-term use of wood, for example as a building material, is able to keep the stored CO2 in stock for longer than the natural tree would have been able to in its late life cycle.
among other things, this gives us time in which a young tree can grow into a relevant CO2 store. Although wood is a natural and renewable resource, its benefits can only be justified if it comes from sustainable forest management. FSC and PEFC certificates confirm this sustainability!

Rosenberger also relied on KIELSTEG timber construction elements for the new construction of assembly hall 29. The system has been proving its worth there for years as part of the ongoing expansion of the Fridolfing site.

Rosenberger Hochfrequenztechnik is one of the world’s leading providers of connection solutions in high-frequency, fiber optic and high-voltage technology. More than 3,000 employees work at the headquarters in Fridolfing.

KIELSTEG elements have already been used there in various hall constructions. One of the key arguments is the high flexibility of use of the halls, which results from the enormous structural performance of the timber components and the resulting large column grid. Schweizerhof hotel spa “das Badehaus” – “the bath house“

The Schweizerhof in Flims is a 4-star hotel opened in 1903, now run by the 4th generation of the Schmidt family. In this project, it has expanded its spa facilities in a harmonious fusion of new and old. A new spa house has been erected over the existing natural stone pool filled with Grander water. The new extension is a sustainable building with a floor area of more than 750 m². Natural spruce panelling on ceilings and stone on the walls, and the windows connecting the inside with the Flims forest outside give the spa its character. Clean and chic, and in harmony with time-honoured traditions and rituals. To make the building as close to climate-neutral as possible, the three-storey bath house was built in wood by local firms. Wood-framed walls and KIELSTEG elements for structural floors and the roof made it possible to achieve the CO₂ reduction target, while also completing the construction in an impressively short time.

The MPREIS supermarket chain from Tyrol has been opening numbers of new stores across Austria in recent years. The company is known for sustainability and for the strikingly individual architecture of their stores.

The store in Klagenfurt is situated in a highly visible position with excellent accessibility along a main road. It combines shopping with a café and bistro zone, adding an attractive meeting place to the new buildings on the site. For this situation, Tyrolean architects i-unit created an unusual and eye-catching design.

The architects’ first idea involved a concrete structure, but after the site survey revealed that the ground was unsuitable for this, they switched to a lightweight wooden construction method. As architect Volker Miklautz says, this change of direction led to a design of a completely different character, with a fantastic atmosphere. Despite the overall weight restriction due to the quality of the ground, the wooden construction was well able to satisfy the requirements with its combination of low deadweight and high strength.

The key to the design are the arcades. They form a sheltered area along the front and side of the store, and also create a pleasant lighting situation in the interior. They form the access ways and entrance, provide shade, and also enclose the outdoor seating area of the bistro.

The building is a low-energy design and its entire energy needs are met by the solar panels on its roof.

Since supermarkets have an indispensable role in society as local suppliers of people’s everyday needs, their owners have to take up the task of building appropriately for our time. This store in Klagenfurt is exemplary in terms of its architecture, its state-of-the-art building methods and performance.

The headquarters of the pump manufacturer Hidrostal AG in Neunkirch is home to the company’s research and development centre, the sales department and a factory, including the in-house foundry for pump castings. Hidrostal’s growth in recent years led to a need for more space for offices and R&D. Considering where to create the extra capacity, the limited amount of free space on the site meant that adding a storey to the existing 1970s office building was the preferred option. An upward extension of this type imposes a load on the existing building that was not originally planned for, and this makes the weight of the materials a key factor in the choice of construction method. In this case, the new storey is a steel-framed structure designed to transmit the load into strong points of the existing concrete building. The existing flat roof was left intact, which meant that the construction work could be done without interrupting use of the building, and independent of the weather. The flat roof of the extension is formed by Kielsteg elements. Kielsteg was chosen because it would span the required width with the lowest weight, forming a fully adaptable, high-quality office space.

Sports hall Šentilj

Šentilj is a small town in the northeast of Slovenia, on the border to Austria, with 8,452 inhabitants. The town has grown strongly in the last two decades, and this created the need to build the new sports and leisure centre. It is the biggest investment in the history of the community. The new building complex has a total of 2,290 m² floor area. This is divided between the central sports halls, with 1,400 m², and a three-storey block right next to them. This section contains the spectator galleries with space for 600 people, and on the other floors, changing rooms, sanitary facilities and utility rooms. A large multipurpose room on the first floor provides views of both the indoor sports halls and the outdoor playing fields. Outside terraces connect the building to the outdoor playing fields and a panoramic view by a balcony on the first floor. A central question that has to be solved in the design of any sports hall is how to build the roof over the hall. The structural solution for the roof is a determining factor for the overall height of the building, and has important implications for costs and compliance with planning regulations. The roof structure and its height also affect the volume of the space that can be used for games and also influence the visual perception of the space. Finally, the ability to use the roof for installation of utilities and sports equipment is also a key requirement of this project category. In Šentilj, the KIELSTEG roof spans the building in a single span of 24 m with an element height of just 80 cm. The building is fully self-sufficient for energy, thanks to the solar array on the slightly inclined flat roof.

Student Canteen

The new ‘Mensa’ student canteen building at the University of Applied Sciences in Landshut, Bavaria, forms part of the entrance ensemble to the campus. It complements the main administration building, which has a strong street-facing aspect, by having a transparent facade opening onto a plaza and pond between the two – leading from the street into the interior of the campus. It is a low-profile wooden building with a green roof that projects over a patio with outdoor seating by the pond. The total recreation zone has an area of 2835 m².

The indoor canteen space with a floor area of almost 600 m² is divided into three sections; it can seat 400 people, and the canteen can serve up to 1400 meals per day. Outside of mealtimes, students can use the space to study. It can also be used as a venue for conferences, concerts and even as a distinguished location for exclusive gala events.

In this case, using KIELSTEG for the roof structure has contributed an essential aspect to the formal design of the building, and is also a key to its flexibility of use. Visually, the roof appears as a thin, wide plane floating over an open space. This is possible because of KIELSTEG’s high loadbearing performance, covering wide spans at a very low element height.

The new canteen, which is operated by the student services organization for Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate, takes its place as one of the most modern buildings of its type in the German university sector.

The building is a long rectangular corpus with side walls that are mostly solid, so that the front end, with glass walls and a sheltered porch area, makes a dramatic contrast, appearing as an open, clean, bright, welcoming entrance. The front gives a deep view into the interior of the shop as an expansive, inviting space. The KIELSTEG elements play a role in this setting by providing a pillar-free interior with a visible wooden ceiling.

The main part of the building is made with reinforced concrete walls and the roof is made of KIELSTEG elements. With a height of just 56 cm, the KIELSTEG roof spans a width of more than 18 m and is well able for the snow load of 3.5 kN expected in the winter. The roof of the porch projects 4 m beyond the walls.

The overall design is a perfect marriage of form and function and makes the building into a memorable expression of the corporate identity. And the KIELSTEG roof structure also plays a role in the significantly reduced CO₂ footprint.

Bakery Rauchensteiner

The new location of the Rauchensteiner bakery in Geisenhausen near Landshut is a showpiece both from an architectural and ecological point of view.

The striking building complex includes a production hall for baked goods and confectionery products and an inviting café with offices above, which are connected to social rooms and a kitchen by a wing. The three parts of the building are framed all around by open terrace areas.

Sustainability played a central role in the planning of the new building. CO2 emissions are significantly reduced through the operation of new, energy-saving ovens, the use of natural gas instead of heating oil and the generation of the company’s own electricity with a PV system.

The roof of the production hall was also realized with KIESTEG timber construction elements. The KIELSTEG system not only gave the planners plenty of leeway in the architectural design, the elements are also PEFC-certified and the lightweight construction only uses as much wood as necessary. The optimized use of the renewable raw material also contributes to sustainability, as does its property as a CO2 store.

BILLA has had a branch in Telfs since 1990, and the shop was showing its age. The company chose to replace it with a completely new building. Impressively, the whole project was completed in 80 days from demolition to reopening. The new supermarket employs 19 people, has a sales floor of 600 m² and serves a catchment area of around 12,000 households. Presentation at the Mass Timber Conference in Portland, Oregon / USA

We are pleased that MINDA Industrieanlagen gave us the opportunity to show the entire technology of the KIELSTEG components and their manufacturing technology to a wide specialist audience at this year’s MTC in Portland. Since the KIELSTEG production plant developed by Minda Industrieanlagen and put into operation in Austria in 2011, there has been a technology partnership around the jointly generated expertise in lightweight cell construction and its manufacturing processes. The joint experiences with KIELSTEG in recent years were the motivation to show the exemplary aspects of lightweight construction technology with a view to the acute key issues in the context of climate protection for the American wood community as a projection screen for their own priorities. Many interesting discussions were held with experts and interested parties from the wood industry and architecture. We are now looking forward to the follow-up discussions with interested parties. Many thanks to all visitors and organizers who contributed to the success of this year’s fair.

KIELSTEG roof on EDEKA store of the future in Nauen

The food retailer EDEKA Minden-Hannover commissioned ZRS Architekten Ingenieure with the planning of an innovative and ecologically sustainable local supply center in timber construction – the „EDEKA future market“ – in the Brandenburg town of Nauen. The building, which is being developed and implemented as a prototype, represents the company’s sustainability concept for climate-friendly management through its sustainable and resource-optimized construction. The new building is a hall structure with highly heat-insulating outer walls in a timber frame construction with wood fiber insulation, which are planked on the inside with glue-free panels made of solid wood boards. The two-storey hall has a supporting structure made of wooden columns and wooden framework trusses made of beech laminated veneer lumber. The structure is approx. 85 m long, 50 m wide and 8.5 m high. The gross floor area is almost 5,000 m2. The roof is made of long-span KIELSTEG timber construction elements, which rest at an angle of inclination of approx. 10° on the lattice girders, which vary in height. The roof construction is formative for the appearance of the building and is associated with rows of gable roofs. The west-facing roof areas are covered with photovoltaic elements, while those facing east are designed as green roofs. Wood is dominant inside and out. The facade is played with the contrast of a carbonated – i.e. charred – wooden facade in the base area and a light lamella facade in the upper part of the facade. In the area of the entrance facade, the building opens up and the wooden facade is interrupted by a plant trellis. The mullion and transom glass facade acts as a shop window into the store. In addition to the decision to build a consistent timber construction, value is also placed on a natural outdoor design with meadow orchards and an educational ecology path, and in particular on the technical building equipment (Picture: bloomimages GmbH).

New Middle School

An existing school building had to be adapted to catch up with changes in how the school is run. The extension, built almost completely in wood, adds 1,500 m² of new floor space. The goals: more space, more light, more quality. Besides offices, the new extension incorporates the foyer, which is also used flexibly for some teaching activities. The first floor features ‘learning islands’ for out-of-classroom learning and teaching. The stairs and walls are made of CLT and a KIELSTEG roof covers the 12-m wide foyer as a single flat surface. The building and remodelling of the school was completed in just one year and within budget. The project was designed by architect Karin Fritz-Weidmann of ingenos ZT GmbH in Gleisdorf, and the building work was done by the firms Muhri and Schranger Holzbaumeister.

Hardware Store & Garden Centre Landring Lagerhaus

The cubic block of the new Landring hardware and garden store in Pirching by Gleisdorf, Styria, covers 3,530 m². Architect Martin Gußmagg from Pischelsdorf focused on making the building as adaptable as possible for future uses. The flat KIELSTEG roof is an important part of the solution. It combines one row of KIELSTEG elements in a single span of 18 m and another row of elements 24 m long with a supporting beam at the midline. The 3,530 m² flat roof rests on the building’s concrete pillar and beam skeleton.

Inside, the roof is visible from end to end as an element that unifies the whole sales floor and adds atmosphere. Rows of generously proportioned skylights provide ample natural lighting.

Open space

Uninterrupted by beams, the roof creates an impression of a single, uncluttered space that is unusual in hardware stores.

Forest and Garden Weniger supplies amateur and professional gardeners, farmers and forestry professionals with a wide range of tools and machines. The new shop in Mistelbach, Lower Austria presents itself as a strict rectangular block with a design that speaks of quality and professionalism. The new hardware store was designed by Viereck Architects from Graz and built in wood. The sales floor of more than 800 m² is completely pillar-free, covered by a KIELSTEG roof spanning its 20 m width, with the underside exposed and visible. The roof structure, which is only 80 cm high, fulfilled the demand for minimal overall height of the building with the maximum free height inside.

Skywood

Near Vienna’s Westbahnhof, a two-storey rooftop extension was added to a house from the late nineteenth century. In a fully built-up area with high demand for housing, the architects Regina M. Lettner and Günter Lagler of skywood by baukult found a way to create new space. The building is positive example of urban densification in terms of ecology, cost and added value.

While respecting the historic fabric, the architects made use of the design freedoms offered by wood and steel as light, high-performance materials.

After 5 weeks of construction, the new space presents itself as welcoming, filled with light and with panoramic views.
